Overwhelming Evidence

Obvious conclusion or decision.
Paul’s warranted/appropriate response to what he has written.

Doxology

A written response of formal praise due to the truths being responded to (doxa = glory; logia = expression).
Scholars believe that some doxologies were hymns or became hymns used in worship.
Significant truth should be acknowledged. Doctrine should be devotional. Deep doctrine can be deeply devotional.
What truths? (Review)
Chapters 1-8: Paul lays out an extensive case for justification by faith alone.
Chapters 9-11: Paul deals with the implications of Israel’s unbelief.
It all builds up to the grand pinnacle of Paul’s revealing of the mystery of Israel’s salvation (11:25-32).
Which stirs this response (vv. 33-36).

What is incomprehensible? (v. 33)

(Beyond full understanding)
“Depth” - extent - “so remote that it is difficult to assess” (BDAG) - to deep to fully explore.
“Oh” - exclamation of amazement
“Riches” - wealth, possessions, what God owns, what God can give (Romans 11:12 “Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!”)
“Wisdom” - skill, understanding for functioning, practical experience
“Knowledge” - comprehension and intelligence of content
“Unsearchable” - unfathomable, impossible to comprehend or understand
“Judgments” - decision and decrees
All of this doctrine reveal certain decisions that God has made (Psalm 36:6 “Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O Lord.”)
“Inscrutable” - incomprehensible (Ephesians 3:8 “To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,”)
“Ways” - course of conduct, in tune with his judgments/decisions
Remember what this is in response to - if you want this response...review.
So this is an exaltation of God (Psalm 145:3 “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.”).

What is impossible? (vv. 34-35)

To advise God (v. 34).
“Mind” - thoughts
“Counselor” - advisor
Isaiah 40:13 “Who has measured the Spirit of the Lord, or what man shows him his counsel?”
No one knows something that God’s doesn’t know.
To advise someone, you have to understand their thinking, and offer additional thoughts.
To give God something He doesn’t have (v. 34).
No one has something that God doesn’t have.
Anything we think we can give already belongs to Him.
Job 41:11 “Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.”
We can be only recipients. We have nothing to offer God.
In all, we are totally dependent. He is totally independent.

What is imperative? (v. 36)

(necessary or required)
Where did everything come from? How does it all continue? Where is it all going?
This means that God should be (necessary/required) acknowledged in all of this.

Review, Reflect, Respond

That’s really what praise is.
It includes, but is more than submission.
Benediction: Romans 16:25–27 “Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.”
